Diving in Komodo

The Komodo islands are home to some amazing dive sites. The colourful reefs are pure eye-candy and the strong currents bring a healthy amount of life. We travelled to Komodo at the beginning of the season (Around mid-March). On the one hand, this is right at the end of the rainy season, which meant we copped a lot of rain. On the other hand, it felt like we had the whole national park to ourselves and we barely saw another boat for the 6 days we were at sea.

Tons of vibrant coloured reef with a good amount of marine life to call it home. However the impact of humans was clear to see. We were disappointed to find a fair amount of trash in most of the sites we visited. Unfortunately, from my experience, this seems to be the norm for many sites in Indonesia these days.

There was no shortage of lion fish, especially at night. I had one particular lion fish follow me for an entire dive. I can only assume that my camera lights were helping him to find food.

Komodo offered many opportunities for night dives. These two little squid hovered around me for several minutes and sent me into a complete trance. The reef below took on a completely different vibe with the hard shadows created from my lights.

This turtle didn’t seem to care about our presence. It just cruised by, elegantly floating over the sand.
